Paschal Candle Artist at St. Paul's, Owego
Diane
Miller, the Sextant of St. Paul's,
Owego has
become a Paschal Candle artist. A new Paschal Candle is an important part of our
Easter worship preparation. Many years ago a parishioner, the late Virginia
Cotter, painted a yearly Paschal Candle for use during the Easter Season. A long
time admirer of Virginia's work Diane, upon Virginia's passing decided to
continue the tradition. Unknown to anyone, she created a beautiful Paschal
Candle featuring a Dogwood Branch with Spring Birds and placed it in the usual
spot for the Good Friday Service. It was greatly admired and so, the tradition
continued.
Since that time, Diane has created nearly twenty candles. Each is unique with both religious and nature inspired themes.
The 2011 candle was her most complex work to date taking
thirteen
and a half hours to complete. The candle featured the figure of Christ painted
in a stained glass style.
Diane, in her quiet unassuming manner, graciously shares her God given ability with St. Paul's in a multitude of ways and we are grateful. Several St. Paul's parishioners have suggested she produce Pascal Candles for other churches in the Diocese at a fee. Diane plans to exhibit at the next Missions Fair and at next year's convention to determine the interest in such an item for other churches.
She is also an artist other media. During the flood clean-up of this past fall it was discovered that both the Crèche structure and the Children's Pageant scenery had been destroyed. Diane and her son Nate produced new scenery and a new Crèche structure for the Holiday Services.
